TWENTY-FOUR

Green Pines Cemetery, Etson - 12:08 PM

Normally, I would have enjoyed John’s outburst, but the pain kept me from feeling the amusement I rightfully deserved. “Dungeon boss,” I said through clenched teeth, lifting my arm. “I grabbed his flaming noose and used it to keep him from escaping into the floor and walls so I could kill him.”

“John, go grab Sasha, tell her we need medical assistance asap,” Thomas commanded.

“No need,” I answered, wishing that I didn’t have all these damn principles. “My belt will rejuvenate my arm in, like, fifteen minutes or so. It’s just a lot of pain until then. Don’t make your healer waste resources on me.”

“Kid, your arm looks like it’s going to fall off.”

I nodded. “It certainly does. You know, the belt can regenerate limbs, maybe I should just cut it off. See how long it takes to grow back.”

“You are one sick motherfucker,” John said.

“You’re right,” I agreed. “But I also have a job to do, and this is just one of the many prices I have to pay to get it done.”

Thomas and John looked at each other before the former shook his head. “Okay, but we can’t let Charlie see you like this. You have something to cover yourself up with?”

I opened my mouth to say something, but then chuckled. “I was going to say he’d still be able to smell the cooked flesh—”

“Please don’t say it like that,” John interjected.

“Fair, but it would be weirder if I didn’t get cooked after all I went through.” I threw my Vague Stick into my inventory before I attempted to peel the ghost noose off of my arm. This time it did work, revealing a sunken trench in my skin from where I had wrapped it. I heard one of the men dry heave and couldn’t help but chuckle again as I turned to watch John retreat to the surface with his hand over his mouth.

“You really are one sick motherfucker,” Thomas commented.

“I already agreed to that.” Once the rope was free of my body, I shoved it into my inventory. Next, I pulled out a black cloak and threw it over my shoulders, making sure it would cover my arm. It did, and I felt it cling to the discharge coming from my blackened skin. “Alright, lead the way.”

Thomas gave me one last look over before nodding and heading up the stairs. John was just outside the mausoleum standing over a pile of vomit. I couldn’t blame him for that. It was horrible. Charlie was sitting near Francis and Jess, digging into what looked like a corn dog and a box of juice. Our eyes met for a moment before he looked towards the ground. The gusto with which he was inhaling the corn dog was immediately quenched, and I sighed.

Not picking up on the child’s mood, Francis stood up and started heading over. “You’re back!”

“Yes, Francis, I’m back. Got a couple things for you, but first…” I rounded on Thomas, pointing at him with my good hand.
